Dr Richard George is the VP of AI and Data Science at Pearson Plc, the world's lifelong learning company. Richard is an influential leader in data science and AI with a proven track record in establishing successful AI start-ups and crafting effective AI strategies.
Long version:
Dr Richard George's first career was as a research scientist, working in academia and early-stage biotech. Following an MBA and some time in life-science venture capital investing, he transitioned to his second career in strategy consulting. Richard now combines his skills and knowledge to build AI products and new business ventures that will greatly benefit society.
Richard has a BSc in Molecular Biology from University College London and a PhD in protein structure prediction from the National Institute for Medical Research (now the Francis Crick Institute). He has worked with world-renowned researchers in the fields of machine learning and medical research. He completed two postdoctoral research positions developing statistical models to predict disease pathways and druggable proteins in the human genome.
Richard has had the privilege of working under Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse and leading researcher in structural bioinformatics Dame Janet Thornton. In 2002, Richard was awarded a Link Grant to work at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge and biotech start-up Inpharmatica – Europe’s first bioinformatics-driven drug-discovery company. Former team members of Inpharmatica have now gone on to found AI drug-discovery businesses Exscientia and Benevolent AI.
Following an MBA at the AGSM in Sydney and Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College, Richard was awarded a Kauffman fellowship and worked at venture capital firm Brandon Capital Partners. More recently, Richard’s focus has been on the implementation of machine-learning to help strategic decision-making, and the adoption of AI technologies within business. Richard joined Third Horizon Consulting Partners and then The Hackett Group, before joining the corporate strategy team at Woolworths. He worked on a number of high-profile strategic projects including the development and integration of Quantium’s data-science products.
Richard is currently the VP of AI and Data Science at Pearson Plc, the world's lifelong learning company. Prior to Pearson, Richard co-founded Faethm AI, where he designed and developed machine-learning algorithms to predict the future of work, enabling companies, governments and individuals to navigate the ever-changing nature of work as many tasks become automated by emerging technologies. During this time he was also Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University’s AI-enabled Processes Research Centre; and Senior Deputy Council Member, Global AI Council for the World Economic Forum.
Richard is a published author in academic peer-reviewed journals with more than 20 publications within the field of bioinformatics (data-science applied to life-science data) and has presented his work at international conferences. More recently, his academic publications are related to the use of machine learning to predict the evolution of work. His work has been featured in The Australian and the Australian Financial Review as an authority on AI and the future impact of emerging technology.
Richard enjoys a variety of interests, including: indoor cycling - so much so that he co-founded the indoor cycle studio PureSpin in 2014; boxing and weight training; developing apps such as his android creativity app Sensical; painting and digital art; and learning to play guitar.
